This tour is meant to help every passionate herpetologist enjoy the vast diversity of reptiles and amphibians of Kenya, a gateway to African herpetology.
Kenya hosts over 120 species of amphibians and over 300 species of reptiles. There are at least 147 Snakes, 140 Lizards, 5 Sea or Marine Turtles, 5 Land Tortoises, 7 Terrapins or Fresh Water Turtles and 1 Crocodile species, in the country.
Kenya’s Herpetology is at its peak in this decade; with new species being discovered and described each year.
We shall depart early and head to the Kinangop Plateau; where our Herpetology Day Tour will take place. We shall enjoy some roadside stops around local bushes and wetlands.
At the plateau, we shall scan local grasslands, farms, rivers and woodland trails seeking local species.
Species of amphibians here include Kinangop Puddle Frog, Kenya Puddle Frog, De Witte’s River Frog, Nutt’s River Frog, Kinangop Dainty Frog/ Kinangop Caco, Mountain Reed Frog/ Kenya Montane Reed Frog, Lonnberg’s Dwarf Toad and Kerinyaga Toad.
Reptiles species here include Common Striped Skink, Kenya Striped Skaapsteker, Montane Egg-eater, Forest Wolf Snake and Von hohnel’s Chameleon.
In the late afternoon, we shall head back to Nairobi, marking the end to our lovely herping tour.
